Around and About Portmahomack.

With its safe sandy beach, suitable for bathing, and picturesque harbour, ‘The Port’ is a wonderful place for a holiday.

Portmahomack (meaning the port of St Colman) began as an historic Pictish settlement dating back to 800 AD, and is the only monastic Pictish settlement that has been discovered in Scotland. Full details of the archaeological dig can be found in the informative Tarbat Discovery Centre.

A few minutes walk along the sea front of the village brings us to the Carnegie Hall, open for Tea during the day.  The village shop and Post Office together with the Oyster Catcher Restaurant also share the sea front street.  Turn right at the Mermaid statue and there is The Castle pub, which also serves meals.  Carry on up the hill to the Tarbat Golf Club, a fantastic nine hole course - a test for golfers of all standards and visitors are always very welcome.

Scotland’s oldest Royal Burgh of Tain is a leisurely ten miles drive along the shores of the Dornoch Firth.  The town has a variety of shops and local amenities. There are three  supermarkets and also several hotels and restaurants - many serving food all day.  Local attractions include ‘Tain Through Time’ - providing an historic account of the town throughout the ages - and of course Tain Golf Course and tennis club.  Just along the road you'll find the home of the world famous Glenmorangie Single Malt Whisky - Glemorangie distillery - "the glen of tranquility".  The distillery has a visitor centre where you can purchase and taste the 'dram'.

Further afield are the Falls of Shin where you can watch the salmon leap the rapids on their annual odyssey up the river to spawn.  Also nearby are the Royal Burgh of Dornoch and Dunrobin Castle -  with its fairy tale architecture - seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland.  All well worth a visit.

Inverness, the Highland Capital offers a modern shopping experience only an hour away.

We hope during your stay here you will find as much or as little as you want to do and enjoy a relaxing holiday in comfortable surroundings.
